Speyside Single Malt
Speyside emerged as the heartland of Scottish whisky because the River Spey and its tributaries provided reliable water sources and the region's grain-growing capacity supported distilling. William Grant opened Glenfiddich in 1887; his 1963 decision to market single malt directly to consumers created the modern premium Scotch category.
Flavor Profile
Fruity (apple, pear, citrus), honeyed, often sherry-influenced, rarely peated. The most accessible entry point for new Scotch drinkers. Stone Fruit-Orchard node prominent from high ester fermentation. Sherry-cask expressions: dried fruit, chocolate, rich caramel.
