Scotch Single Malt
Single malt Scotch was not marketed directly to consumers until Glenfiddich did so in 1963. Before that, malt whisky was primarily a blending component. The single malt category's rise from 1963 onward represents one of the most successful product repositionings in spirits history.
Flavor Profile
Highly variable by region. Speyside: fruity, honeyed, sherry-influenced. Highland: diverse, from gentle to rich. Islay: peated, medicinal, maritime. Lowland: light, floral, delicate. Campbeltown: briny, oily, complex. Islands: maritime, pepper, salt. Scotch receives subtler vanilla/caramel than bourbon (second-fill casks have already given up most extractable compounds).
