Plymouth Gin

The Blackfriars Distillery has made gin in Plymouth since at least 1793, inside a Dominican friary that predates English gin distilling by centuries. The style's PGI status made it the only geographically protected gin in the world, though the brand let that protection lapse in 2015.

Flavor Profile

Sits between London Dry and Old Tom on the flavor spectrum. Softer than London Dry, not as sweet as Old Tom. Earthier, fuller body from root botanical emphasis. Juniper present but softened. Citrus leans toward orange rather than lemon. Finish is round rather than crisp. Blends and integrates in cocktails rather than cutting through.

Formerly held a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) — the only gin with a geographic indicator — requiring production at Blackfriars Distillery in Plymouth. The PGI was allowed to lapse in 2015 as no competitors were using the name. No longer legally protected as a geographic style; exists as a single-producer style in practice.
