Overproof Rum

Overproof rum traces to British Royal Navy practice — the gunpowder test established 'proof' as a minimum standard for purchasing rum (ensuring it was strong enough to ignite). The original Navy daily tot was a half-pint of overproof, later diluted with water to create 'grog.'

Flavor Profile

Carries more flavor per ounce than standard-proof rums — overproof is a flavor concentration tool as much as a proof statement. Estery-Funky in Jamaican versions (banana peel, pineapple, nail polish), rich Chocolate-Roast/Spice-Warm in Demerara versions. The higher ABV carries aromatics directly to the nose.
