Kahlúa (Coffee Liqueur)
Kahlúa created in Veracruz, Mexico, 1936. Named from the language of the Totonac people. For 70 years it was the default coffee liqueur — ubiquitous in 1970s–80s cocktail culture. The Mr. Black challenge (2013) fractured the category between the sweet, accessible approach and the coffee-forward, quality-focused approach.
Flavor Profile
Sweet-Caramel primary, Roasted-Coffee secondary. 'Coffee with cream and sugar already added.' Gentle, accessible, the coffee flavor is present but soft — 'functional.' The Espresso Martini with Kahlúa tastes like dessert; with Mr. Black it tastes like a cocktail.
