Cask Strength / Barrel Proof Whiskey
Cask strength bottlings were historically reserved for trade samples. The modern consumer market for cask strength developed in the 1980s-90s as enthusiasts sought more authentic, less processed expressions. Booker Noe of Jim Beam is credited with popularizing cask strength bourbon in America with Booker's launch in 1988.
Flavor Profile
Intensely spicy-warm due to high proof amplifying tannin delivery and stimulating pain receptors. Adding water 'unlocks' trapped flavor compounds — high-proof ethanol clusters around flavor molecules; water breaks those clusters, releasing aromas. More concentrated than standard-proof bottlings.
