Tasting Notes

Bitter orange peel, cognac warmth, vanilla, oak, caramel, dried fruit, candied citrus, toasted nut. The cognac gives it depth and warmth that triple sec lacks. Orange bitterness balances the sweetness. Finish is long, warm, and complex — you taste the aging. Higher expressions add more cognac character and less sweetness.

Brand Guide

Standard: Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge ($30-35, the benchmark).

Premium

Cuvée Louis Alexandre ($50-60, VSOP cognac)

Top Shelf

Cuvée du Centenaire ($150-200, XO cognac). Cuvée 1880 ($250+, ultra-premium). Competitors: Cointreau ($25-30, neutral spirit base), Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao ($25-30, cognac base, drier). Grand Marnier's cognac base makes it fundamentally different from neutral-spirit orange liqueurs
