Scorpion Bowl

24-48 oz

Large communal tiki vessel with a central well for a flaming garnish — built for sharing.

History

Origin

The scorpion bowl is a tiki vessel that originated in the 1930s-40s at Trader Vic's restaurants. Victor Bergeron created the Scorpion cocktail — a communal punch of rum, brandy, orgeat, orange juice, and lime — and designed a large ceramic bowl with a central well for the shared, communal drinking ritual. The bowl's design draws from Chinese and Polynesian communal drinking traditions, filtered through the mid-century American tiki imagination.

Evolution

Scorpion bowls became a staple of Polynesian restaurants and Chinese-American restaurants in the 1960s-70s, where they remain popular today. The "volcano bowl" variant adds a dramatically flared shape and a larger central well for bigger flames. The communal format — everyone drinking from the same bowl through long straws — made it a party ritual. The modern tiki revival has brought back artisan scorpion bowls from ceramicists, though the classic restaurant-supply versions persist.

Why This Shape

The central well is the key design element — it holds a small amount of overproof rum (typically 151-proof) that gets lit on fire, creating a theatrical centerpiece. The wide, shallow bowl allows the drink to be mixed and ladled easily. The generous capacity (24-48 oz) serves 2-4 people. The wide rim accommodates multiple long straws radiating outward so everyone can drink simultaneously. The heavy ceramic base prevents tipping when multiple people are pulling on straws.

Fun Fact

The fire in a scorpion bowl is purely theatrical — it does not flavor the drink (the overproof rum in the well is separate from the cocktail in the bowl). However, some bartenders will sprinkle cinnamon over the flame for a sparkler effect, which actually does add a subtle smoky-spice aroma to the experience.

Bartender's Tip

The center well holds overproof rum that gets lit on fire — this is the ceremony. Each person gets a long straw. Serves 2-4 people. Do not try to drink from the bowl directly.
